Understanding the WordPress WYSIWYG Editor Tabs

(Below is a video transcription)

Hey guys, Rob here from Bizow Online. In today’s little 2 minute WordPress tip, all I want to do is to give you a bit of an introduction to the WYSIWYG editor, which is this thing here. And the WYSIWYG stands for “What You See Is What You Get.”

Today in particular, I want to show you the Visual and the Text tab, because you may have seen them there before, and you may have wondered, ‘Well what exactly do they do?’

So, with the Text– when you have the Text tab selected, you can basically come in here and start typing some text like so. Now the great thing about the Visual editor, it will put in all the code for you and it will make it look basically like what it would look like when you go and actually publish this and actually see this on a webpage and what a viewer will also see on a webpage.

Now the Text tab, if we click over onto that, and it’s a left click, you’ll see that it will actually put in sort of the code for you. So you can see all formatting’s been taken out of it. And if you’re very good with HTML, this can be a very, very good way to work. Although the great thing about a WordPress or a CMS, Content Management System, like WordPress is, is that you don’t need to know the code. So for instance, you can come in here. You can make things, headings and make things bold and all sorts of things. And if I go back into my Text editor, you can see it’s actually putting the code back in there for me. I haven’t had to know what those tags were to make it look that way.

So very, very quickly, that’s basically the difference between the two tabs. The Visual allows anybody to come in and type content, and you can see how easy it is there. Obviously I’m just typing in gobbly-gook. Then the Text, if you’re HTML proficient, that will allow you to come in and make some fine-tuning adjustments there. Again, the one you pick will depend on the way you like to work.

Okay, guys, that’s it. Hopefully that’s helped, and I’ll catch you in another 2 minute video on WordPress in a bit. See you soon.
